What is VMWare?

Virtualization software for x86-compatible computers. VMWare is a company that provides desktop and server virtualization products for virtual infrastructure solutions.

Virtualization allows you to run multiple operating systems and multiple applications one the same computer at the same time fully maximising the hardware. The actual hardware of a computer is considered the HOST MACHINE, and the operating system running in that virtual machine is considered the GUEST. The VMWare software works similar to emulation software providing a virtual hardware system to the guest operating system. VMware inserts a thin layer of software directly on the computer hardware or on a host operating system which then creates virtual machines and contains a virtual machine monitor. VMware provides a virtualization platform that can scale across many nterconnected physical computers and storage devices forming a virtual infrastructure.

Desktop software - VMWare Workstation: VMWare Workstation software allows users to run multiple x86-compatible operating systems on just one PC or server.

Server software - VMWare ESX Server and VMWare Server: For an enterprise solution, the ESX Server is the right product as it integrates into VMware Virtual Infrastructure. This provides additional services to enhance the reliability and manageability of a server deployment. VMware Server provides a user interface with a similar look-and-feel to VMware Workstation.
