All you parents know.. Nothing... I repeat... Nothing .. is better than being Mom or Dad.  I mean what can ever compare with the first time you hear the word .. Mom? .. or Dad?  Exactly...nothing!
You parents also know that being a parent is not for the faint of heart.  Especially the parents of a teen!  I vividly recall the crazy s%#t I did as a teenager.  No wonder we parents get gray hair!
Now I'm talking specifically about crazyness in a car.  You Dads know exactly what I'm talkin' about.  You may never discuss your past vehicular escapades with your spouse or children but you do know what I'm talking about- right?  Well, not too long ago my third boy started driving.  Cool.  But..
When he drove away from the curb and down the street I got the strangest, most uncomfortable feeling in my gut.  You know the one?  Yeah, that one.  Will he be ok?  Where's he going?  How fast is he going?  Will he drive safely?  He wouldn't do the crazy stuff that I did, would he?  Yeah, that's about the time it all comes back to haunt you.
So this is the spot a lot of us find ourselves in.  We all want our kids to do well in school and at some point get a job and find their own way.   With a little oversight from us of course.  Naturally the first thing our kids mention is how much a car would improve their chances of being on time to school and work.  And naturally we figure that's true to a point.  So naturally, we help them get a car.  And naturally we figure that if we helped them get a car then it's also our job to make sure they drive responsibly, right?  Hey it is our job to watch out for them.  I got your back and all that?  When they took their first steps, didn't you stay close enough to catch them if they fell?  I did too.  And when they started kindergarten didn't you watch them walk all the way into school?  Me too.
So how come we can't try to help them ease into the responsibility of operating 5,000 pounds of steel and glass?!  Are you kidding me?!!
I REMEMBER HOW I DROVE!!!
O.K., maybe not all guy parents (or girl parents) got so crazy with their cars, but I really don't like the idea of my boy going ANYWHERE he wants to yet.  He's only 16 for crying out loud.  And if I had a girl child I really wouldn't like the idea.  Call me sexist if you want to but I'm pretty sure most parents feel the same.  And just how fast is my kid driving down Main Street?  The whole "coming back to haunt me" thing again.  Or if the neighbors (or cops!) come a callin' saying my child was tearin' a blue streak through the neighborhood in that nice, new, shiny Acura that I bought him, how would I know for sure?  Hmmmm!
If we parents had access to the technology that's available today I venture to say that all this would be a mute point.  With the advent of real time gps tracking devices, like the ones available through coderedgps.com, parents can see exactly where and how fast their kids are driving.  Remember watchin' their back?  Well I figure that letting our kids know that we're lookin' out for 'em even when they're on the road and out of sight is a good thing.  Sure they might make a fuss about us "spying" on 'em and "invading their privacy", but they make a fuss anytime we look out for 'em.  Just like their first steps and first date.
In conclusion, Moms...Dads... don't you dare feel guilty any time you watch out for your kids' safety.
In fact most kids feel better knowing somebody cares and is willing to go to the trouble of doing something about it.  Even if they do "protesteth loudly"!  So, keep the faith y'all, and be strong.  These kids might turn out o.k. after all.
